Mike Phillips: A Beacon of Kindness and Faith in the UAAP
College basketball is fiercely competitive. It showcases grit, pride, and intense rivalries that sometimes cloud judgment. In the heat of the game, some players lose their mental toughness, leading to regrettable decisions.
While most UAAP student-athletes are kind-hearted, kindness often requires effort and strength. It demands the ability to see the good in every situation, no matter the circumstances. Yet, Mike Phillips makes it seem effortless.
Phillips has been instrumental in the DLSU Green Archers’ stellar run in Season 87. A member of the Mythical Five and the recipient of the “Maaasahan Player of the Season” award for the most double-doubles, his performance on the court earned widespread respect. Despite his achievements, Phillips rarely took credit for the points he contributed to the team’s success.
When recognized for his statistics, Phillips consistently acknowledged his teammates’ efforts. He ensured the glory was shared, taking the time to thank his coaches, teammates, family, the DLSU community, and the Man above. Even when the team fell short of their ultimate goal, he reminded his teammates how proud he was of them.
I recall a moment when Phillips apologized to the media for a slight delay. It was a brief wait, but the gesture underscored his deep respect for everyone around him.
Throughout the season, he was a beacon of humility, offering smiles and thoughtful answers in both casual conversations and serious interviews. His energy radiated through his words and actions, inspiring those around him to be kind as well.
When asked why he remains kind and plays with so much heart, Phillips simply replied, “It’s all God.”
“God Did.”
Those words have become synonymous with Mike Phillips and his team. As an expression of his faith, Phillips joined Club Redeemed, a brand led by Justine Galang. Through street-style apparel, they aim to inspire others on their spiritual journeys. Phillips collaborated with the brand to release the “God Did” collection, with teammates JC Macalalag, EJ Gollena, and Earl Abadam contributing to its influence.
Mike Phillips exemplifies kindness through his love for the sport, the community, and God. Fully embodying the “maaasahan” title, he remains determined to give back to La Salle and return stronger for Season 88.
