UPWVT Captain Nica Celis Enters 2025 PVL Draft
University of the Philippines’ (UP) Nica Celis enters her name into the Premier Volleyball League’s (PVL) Goblet of Fire, officially declaring her eligibility in this year’s draft. If selected, the 5-foot-10 middle blocker joins the country’s professional level, sharing the court with former State U graduates Tots Carlos, Isa Molde, Jewel Encarnacion, and Steph Bustrillo.
Celis played her first season in 2019 and remained a valuable rotation piece under four head coaches. She led UP to a fifth-place finish in the previous season—their highest since Season 78.
“The best lesson I learned throughout my years in UP is tibayan ng utak at puso. My stay has been very challenging talaga, but you really have to find the good in everything and make everything work out,” she mentions in a statement.
Nica Celis and the Fighting Maroons toppled powerhouses FEU, NU, and DLSU, concluding with a 6-8 standing (tied with AdU). Alongside her, the dynamic mix of veterans Joan Monares, Irah Jaboneta, and second-best middle blocker, Nina Ytang, and first-year standouts Kianne Olango and Jaz Manguilongotan, tripled the program’s win total from the previous two seasons.
Witnessing the program’s development throughout her Diliman tenure, Celis understands the work and dedication required to make the final 14. Stepping onto unfamiliar territory, she remains hopeful for what’s ahead, enacting a full-time commitment to a lifelong passion.
“I know it won’t be easy pagdating sa pro, but because I love what I do, I’m sure kaya ko rin i-conquer yung challenges doon,” she adds.
PVL’s 2025 Draft festivities commence on May 26, 2025, with the lottery, succeeding the completion of draft requirements. The league’s rookie combine is scheduled from May 30-31, 2025, followed by the announcement of applicants (June 4, 2025) and the draft proper (June 7, 2025).
