Young stud Andy Gemao to play high school basketball in Toronto
Sensational young basketball standout Andy Gemao is set to play high school basketball in Ontario, Canada, according to a report by ABS-CBN News.
The 18-year-old high-flyer tried out for Royal Crown High School in Ontario and was accepted to the team. He will be in the lineup for his remaining year of high school eligibility this fall.
“He’s explosive. I love the way he moves. I think it’s very, very crafty. He reminds me of Kyrie Irving. When he had his try-out at Royal Crown, that’s who us and the coaching staff compared him to. Just the way he gets to the rim, his body control, his change of pace – he’s explosive,” said coach Ray Montaniel, who handles Fil-Canada Nation Select and is part of Royal Crown’s staff.
Gemao was a standout from Letran in the NCAA high school rank, winning Finals MVP only two seasons ago. He spent the last year in the United States with the goal of continuing his high school career there, but it didn’t work out because of technical issues.
He now takes his act to Canada where he has the unique chance to play for a program that has won 16 basketball titles in its history and has developed prospects into becoming NCAA Div I recruits.
“There’s a huge difference from here than from the Philippines,” Gemao told ABS-CBN in Tagalog. “The players are more skilled here and almost all of the players are strong. They don’t have weaknesses.”
A young standout considered to be one of the faces of Philippine hoops, Gemao will have his family close to him in Canada which should help in the progression of his overall development.
The last time Gemao was in the Philippines, he helped Fil-Nation Select win gold in the NBTC and suited up for the UP Fighting Maroons in the Pinoyliga Cup.
If Gemao plays college basketball in the Philippines, the expectation is he will commit to the Fighting Maroons.
