The Giannis Conundrum

Giannis is injured, and could be out for weeks. Should the Bucks already explore the notion of letting the Greek Freak go for a chance at a rebuild?

Has Giannis played his last game as a Buck?

Everyone knows that the relationship between Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, including the city and the fans, have soured a bit in the past few weeks. There are lots of booing involved both from the fans in the arena and from the players, and a lot of teams are circling around the prospect of acquiring one of the league’s best players and top producers. This season, the Greek Freak averages 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 assists, on 65% shooting and 40% from three. For the uninitiated, yes, those are insane numbers.

Giannis said that he could be out for 4 weeks, yet Doc Rivers has mentioned that Giannis probably won’t return for a while and that there is no timetable for his recovery. Even if Doc only said that to quell rumors and manage expectations, the situation characterizes the precariousness of it all–that Giannis could have played his last game in a Cream City jersey.

The Bucks need to ask themselves about what they prefer–continue making moves around Giannis, or sell high and get back some of the future they traded for the past years’ acquisitions (remember that Damian Lillard move that didn’t really age well?) while they have a chance.

With all this happening in the background, it is the fantasy enthusiast’s job to figure out who’s filling the stat sheet without that 30-10-6 from the Freak.

A lot of pundits believe that Ryan Rollins could be a key piece, and his stats back it up–16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game–he is the second best player and scorer behind Giannis. Kevin Porter Jr. has the talent, but is frequently out. Myles Turner could be gone next season, but while he’s in a Bucks uniform, he could be a consistent double-double machine. The Kyle Kuzma experiment is probably over, but he still is a legitimate scoring threat on good days.

The Bucks have a lot to figure out before the February 5 trade deadline.
