A First Look at the UAAP Esports Jerseys

By: Niklas Arriola and Mario Alvaro Limos

The inaugural season of UAAP Esports is right around the corner. Along the new stage of the competition comes the future superstars and jam-packed action that the league has never seen before.

The eight schools have also upgraded their style game with new threads they will showcase come game day.

NO, the jerseys are not for sale as of this writing as they are for exclusive use of the UAAP Esports athletes.

Let’s take a closer look at the details behind these jerseys.

As they soar the skies for victory, the San Marcelino squad is debuting a new side of the Soaring Falcons, this time around with their unique take on Esports.

According to ADU’s Esports adviser Dio Robles, the choice of Navy Blue as one of the shirt’s colors was inspired by the Navy Seals, which responds to the fighting spirit of the Falcons, ready for battle at any time. This pairs up with the trademark sky-colored lettering for the surnames and the ADAMSON logo in the middle.

A headshot of the school’s titular moniker is placed to complete the dri-fit’s layout, and a Chinese collar finished for extra style points.

Representing one of the sides of Katipunan, the Blue Eagles that will be landing on Arete for the games will be gearing up with a simplistic approach for design, with a strong aquamarine hue for the collared uniforms.

The school’s name is engraved at the jersey’s chest, with the surname imprinted in to complement the ADMU colors for the fight of the blue and white. Also prominent on Ateneo’s jersey is the Jordan logo, which is present in all the sports uniforms of the school.

De La Salle University (DLSU)

Sometimes, simplicity and brevity carry more weight. La Salle opted for plain silhouette with a simple calligraphic text of the school name on the chest. Unlike the usual polyester material used in esports jerseys, La Salle’s UAAP Esports uniform is made of cotton. The no-frills design is laid back and simple, maybe because the most eloquent statement for La Salle is what happens in Arete’s arenas on game day.

While jerseys were designed to show the school’s pride and colors, the story behind this one runs deeper from our cultural roots.

Aki Yatco, FEU’s jersey designer, explains that the aim for the esports jersey was to imprint a symbol from the hometown of the Tamaraws in the island of Mindoro. Upon discovering the beautiful patterns of the tapestry from the Iraya-Mangyan community, Aki has woven a tamaraw-shaped pattern in the Art Deco style that is prevalent around the campus.

Fusing it with the Tams’ colors of green and gold, the modest yet complex approach to the jersey allows the team and its players’ name to shine from the darker shades.

National University (NU)

While others went redesigning for the esports tournament, the Bulldogs decided to keep their team’s jersey in line with those used in all sports throughout the season to unify the athletes in whatever field they step on.

Tuning it down on the gimmicks, NU takes a minimalist approach with their blue and white shirts, while putting emphasis on the school’s name written out in white and gold with the school’s iconic canine logo right under.

The clean finish resonates with the school’s focus on representing their campus while ensuring their players’ names will always be in everyone’s eyes.

Being the newest addition to España’s lair of champions, the Teletigers introduce themselves with their org’s logo brightly seen across the school’s symbol. Unlike the usual uniforms paraded by UST’s players, the school’s Growling Tiger shows itself proudly, sprayed in a dash of white and yellow.

Golden sleeves and stripes align themselves around the shirt, with the quote “Growl for Glory” as a callback to the biggest prey the Teletigers pack is hunting for.

University of the East (UE)

UE’s UAAP Esports jersey has elements of the red warrior icon, particularly the Red Warrior’s hair silhouette, seen decorating the jersey’s shoulders and collar. A red trimming on the sleeve brings the whole design together, just like the Warrior’s iconic red bandana. In terms of branding and design, UE’s jersey is on point: You can instantly recognize that this belongs to the University of the East even if there is no name of the school printed anywhere on the front or back of the shirt. UE’s is one of the best jerseys we’ve seen this inaugural season of UAAP Esports.

University of the Philippines (UP)

The initial idea for the UP Esports Varsity Team’s uniform was to showcase the school’s history while paying homage to Oblation Esports’ original design that closely resembles the Sablay, an honorary sling given to the graduates of the university.

As the white Seigaiha waves flow throughout the black spaces of the shirt, columns of Baybayin script spell out the words “UP” repeatedly as a nod to the ones inscribed on the Sablay. Brownish hues at the sides serve as the finishing touches for the Fighting Maroons.

While engineered for gaming, UP’s shirt is on another pedestal, taking a priority in their design with an ingenuity of combining performance, comfort and style, all in one.
