After Losing to FCAP, Why is Coach Wolf Happy?
Coach Wolf was visibly happier when he walked into the media room after TNC’s defeat in the hands of Falcons AP BREN during Week 1, Day 2 of MPL Philippines Season 14.
“I think overall, although we lost, masaya naman overall. The joy outweighs the sadness,” Coach Wolf told ALL-STAR.
One hundred percent, when we were facing Falcons AP BREN, ang hirap nilang talunin. They have the experience, they have skilled players, tapos matalino pa sila, and they have great copaching staff, so pound for pound, ang hirap nilang tapatan. But in two of the games, we almost won, you could count that as a win,” said Wolf.
Even Coach Duckey acknowledged the improvement in TNC’s performance.
“I feel like they’re starting to understand the strengths of their team,” Coach Duckey told ALL-STAR. I do hope that they reinforce that and the strengths of their team.”
Coach Wolf Learns a Crucial Lesson Other Coaches Are Keeping Secret
Five weeks into the regular season with a few games left to play, TNC is in a precarious position if they want to secure a playoffs slot. Nevertheless, they still have time and Coach Wolf has learned the most crucial lesson in coaching that other coaches are keeping secret: winning happens outside the game.
“Mindset outweighs everything,” Coach Wolf says.
It’s something that Coach Duckey of FCAP and Coach TicTac of Team Liquid, both world champions, have known for a long time.
Coach Wolf ensures his team’s mental health is in top shape by insulating the players from the pressures of esports, making sure they have to have fun. On weekdays, they would go out and bond over coffee and games.
“The team whose emotion and mentality are not developed will never translate their training into action during tournaments.”
Coming onto the stage against the two-time world champions, nobody from TNC showed any pressure.
“We just wanted to enjoy the game!” said TNC Gold Laner Salvick Torralba aka Kouzen.
With almost nothing to lose with a 0-8 deficit in the regular season, TNC vows to keep improving and enjoying their upcoming matches to reach the playoffs.
