Rybakina Advances, But Alex Eala Shows She Belongs on the Big Stage
ITALY — Alex Eala delivered another impressive performance on the international stage, but world No. 2 Elena Rybakina proved too strong in a 6-4, 6-3 victory during their first-ever meeting at the WTA 1000 Internazionali BNL d’Italia.
Rybakina used her experience, power, and length to control key stretches of the match, showcasing why she remains one of the top players in women’s tennis. Known for her dominant serve, the reigning Wimbledon champion added eight aces to her tournament total while consistently putting pressure on Eala from the baseline.
Still, Eala refused to back down.
The Filipina standout showed flashes of brilliance throughout the contest, matching Rybakina’s intensity in several rallies and forcing the world No. 2 to earn every point.
Adjusting Against the World No. 2
One of the biggest turning points came in the second set when Eala adjusted her approach on returns. After initially positioning herself several steps behind the baseline, she began attacking Rybakina’s serves earlier, helping her take a brief 2-1 lead and shifting the momentum momentarily.
Speaking to Dyan Castillejo after the match, Eala expressed satisfaction with how she competed against one of the world’s best players.
“I’m happy with my performance,” Eala said. “I think I was able to reach a good level of tennis. I don’t think it was an easy win for her.”
“Being aggressive is really my game but, in the end, she’s 2 meters. So, it’s difficult. But I think today I did what I could, and yeah, I’m happy.”
Eala also displayed strong anticipation throughout the match, reading several of Rybakina’s placements on lobs and short balls to create scoring opportunities of her own.
In crucial moments, she embraced the challenge head-on, trading powerful groundstrokes with one of the tour’s hardest hitters instead of retreating defensively.
Eala also pointed to her movement and decision-making as areas she felt good about during the match.
“I think I moved well today and I took my chances when I needed to,” she said in her interview with Castillejo. “I’m very happy with this week because I do see the improvement on clay court, especially when you compare it to my experience here last year.”
“I am really happy with how I’ve been playing and the work I’ve been doing off competition with my team.”
While the result ultimately went Rybakina’s way, Eala once again showed she can compete against the world’s elite. Against one of the WTA Tour’s top-ranked players, the young Filipina demonstrated composure, adaptability, and the confidence to challenge the very best on one of tennis’ biggest stages.
