Byron Scott to Coach Fil-Nation Select in 2025 NBTC Tournament

Byron Scott, a three-time NBA champion and former head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, has been named head coach of Fil-Nation Select – USA team for next year’s National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) tournament, typically held in March.

The appointment was confirmed by Rodel Lizan, Executive Director for Fil-Nation Select, marking a significant milestone for the team as they aim to build on their reputation as a proving ground for Filipino-American basketball talent.

Scott’s addition is a high-profile move for Fil-Nation Select, which has consistently showcased elite-level talent in the NBTC tournament.

“Having Coach Scott’s pedigree and coaching expertise will help bring the development for Philippines basketball to another level. It’s not a benefit just to our kids in our program but really in the entire country. Coach Scott looks to network and connect with the basketball stakeholders and that was one of the main reasons it was fitting to have him,” Lizan said.

Potential Coaching Staff

Joining Scott on the coaching staff could be his son, Thomas Scott, adding a familial dynamic to the team’s leadership. Last year’s head coach, Chris Gavina, is also expected to remain involved, providing continuity and insights from his experience guiding the squad in previous tournaments. Likewise for coach Russell Raypon.

Star-Studded Roster

Fil-Nation Select’s roster for 2025 boasts an impressive lineup of talent. Among those likely to play are Angelino Marks, Andrew Miller, Eian Lowe, Sebastian Margate, and Hunter Marumoto – key names expected to lead the team’s campaign.

Caelum Harris, who turned heads in Fil-Nation Select’s title-winning campaign last year, is also considering another stint.

The NBTC eligibility rule allows players born in 2005 or later, giving Fil-Nation Select a rich pool of talent to assemble their roster.

Aiming for Success

Fil-Nation Select has consistently represented Filipino-American players in the NBTC tournament, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills in front of scouts, coaches, and fans in the Philippines. With Scott at the helm, the team hopes to not only succeed in the tournament but also continue its mission of bridging talent across continents.

More details about the 2025 NBTC tournament and Fil-Nation Select’s final roster are expected to be announced in the coming months.
