The UST Growling Tigers commenced their season in impressive fashion by defeating both UE and Ateneo by double digits to start the men’s basketball tournament at 2-0. However, the team fell short in their third game, losing to Adamson, 69-56.
UST veteran Nic Cabañero registered 16 points and 5 rebounds, but was unhappy with his performance for the game against Adamson, which used a dominant third quarter to pull away from their opponents who were favored to win the game.
Cabañero plans to do all that he can for the Growling Tigers moving forward in order to get back on track.
“I’m not really happy cause we lost eh. So, wala, I’m just going to do what my role is in our team. So gagawin ko lang kung anong makakaya ko para makatulong ako nang marami sa team ko,” he told ALL-STAR Magazine in an exclusive interview.
Cabañero also said that he didn’t think there was extra pressure on the team because of their consecutive wins coming into the game. Instead, he thinks the factor in losing was that these UAAP teams are not easy opponents and should not be taken for granted.
“I think this is our wake-up call for us to remind our team na malayo pa kami sa katotohanan. Hindi talaga basta-basta mga UAAP teams, hindi ka basta-basta mananalo sakanila. This will help us more and be ready for our next game,” Cabañero stated.
“I think we need to stay hungry and humble ourselves,” he said in regards to coming back and regaining their composure in their upcoming game against 1-1 NU. “We just need to adjust sa kung ano sasabihin ng coaches namin, and we’re trying to improve every game and learn from our mistakes.”
The Growling Tigers play the Bulldogs on September 21, Saturday.
