James Payosing Set to Transfer to UP Fighting Maroons

San Beda Red Lions standout James Payosing is making a bold move in his collegiate basketball career. The NCAA Season 99 Finals MVP has decided to transfer to the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, where he will undergo a one-year residency in 2025 before suiting up for UAAP Season 89 in 2026, sources told ALL-STAR Magazine.

Payosing, a versatile 6’2” forward, was instrumental in San Beda’s championship run, delivering key performances on both ends of the floor. He averaged 8.48 points and 7.7 rebounds in Season 99 while making his presence felt on defense with timely steals, blocks, and hustle plays. His efforts earned him the Finals MVP honors, solidifying his reputation as a game-changer.

Despite his success in the NCAA, Payosing was reportedly drawn to the Fighting Maroons’ program in the UAAP. Under head coach Goldwin Monteverde, UP has emerged as a powerhouse in their side of collegiate basketball, attracting top-tier talent from across the country. Sources say Payosing was particularly impressed by the team’s system.

With his transfer, Payosing will sit out the entire 2025 season due to UAAP residency rules. However, he will have two years of eligibility beginning in 2026, when he aims to make an immediate impact for the Fighting Maroons. His addition is expected to bolster UP’s already stacked roster, giving them another battle-tested athlete who thrives under pressure following the departure of Harold Alarcon, Terrence Fortea, and Gerry Abadiano.

The Fighting Maroons, who have been consistently contending for UAAP championships, are known for reloading their roster with top recruits and transfers. Payosing’s decision to join them underscores UP’s growing influence as a destination for elite collegiate players.

For now, Payosing will focus on improving his game during his residency year, preparing for what could be a defining chapter in his basketball career.
