Julian Zapata Commits to UE Red Warriors, Eyes Medicine
Julian Zapata, a rising Filipino-American basketball prospect from Olympia, Washington, has committed to the University of the East (UE) Red Warriors, as confirmed by his representation, Fil-Nation Select. Zapata is set to be eligible for five playing seasons beginning UAAP Season 88.
Standing at 6’2″, Zapata has been a key player for the Olympia High School Bears, where he played guard for the varsity team. Known for his solid court vision, perimeter shooting, and quick decision-making, he contributed significantly to Olympia’s continued dominance in their division. His high school team recently clinched a fifth consecutive trip to the state playoffs, with Zapata playing a central role in their success.
He also gained recognition through Fil-Nation Select, a program that showcases elite Filipino-American basketball talent. Participating in their showcases gave Zapata exposure to international scouts and highlighted his connection to the Filipino basketball community. His performances have drawn praise for his basketball IQ and disciplined, team-first style of play.
Zapata’s commitment to UE marks a pivotal move not just for his athletic career, but also for his academic goals. He plans to pursue a degree in medicine at UE, following the path of his mother, who is an alumna of the university. This dual pursuit of academics and athletics was a key factor in choosing UE over other opportunities.
A full-blooded Filipino, Zapata will officially join the Red Warriors after he graduates from high school this June. His arrival is part of UE’s broader effort to tap into the global Filipino talent pool and rebuild a competitive roster in the UAAP.
With both long-term academic aspirations and elite basketball experience, Zapata represents a new generation of student-athletes who are bridging worlds—bringing international polish to Philippine collegiate sports while staying rooted in academic pride.
