The National University Bulldogs may have caught a tough break early in their UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball campaign.
ALL-STAR Magazine has learned from league sources who spoke under the condition of anonymity that Bulldogs foreign student-athlete big man Mo Diassana suffered a serious injury to his left knee that could keep him out for an extended period of time, perhaps for the remainder of the UAAP season.
When asked for confirmation on the matter, National University head coach Jeff Napa said that the school is expected to make an official announcement on Diassana’s status soon to clarify the matter.
After waiting for his shot to play as NU’s FSA behind Omar John for the better part of two years, Diassana’s UAAP debut ended less than halfway through the first quarter of the Bulldogs’ season-opening contest against defending champion DLSU on Sunday, September 8.
The 21-year-old injured his knee while defending a drive by reigning league MVP Kevin Quiambao. Diassana seems to have injured his knee after planting his left foot awkwardly while moving laterally.
The Bulldogs kept the game close against the Green Archers – even leading by 7 midway through the final quarter – before Quiambao’s late-game heroics sealed the tight win for La Salle.
With Diassana expected to miss significant time, National University will have to play with an FSA-less line-up which would mean more responsibility for the likes of PJ Palacielo and Kenshin Padrones.
The duo finished with 22 points on a combined 10-of-15 shooting plus 17 rebounds against La Salle.
