After winning the championship with the Meralco Bolts in the recently concluded 48th Philippine Cup of the PBA, Chris Newsome this time turns his sights on a bigger role with Gilas Pilipinas and renewed responsibility when it comes to contributing for the national team.

“Majority of my confidence comes from the reps I put in every single day. Those reps are what carry over whether I’m playing with the PBA or with Gilas,” said Newsome in an interview after the game against the Mustangs where his squad won 74-64.

Newsome mentioned that he will be playing as a point guard for majority of his time in the court because of necessity in the wake of Scottie Thompson’s injury which unfortunately forced him to beg off in these upcoming games.

“Of course, I’m an initiator, I’m a point guard here. My job is to run the offense and get us into a rhythm.” Newsome added.

However, Newsome said that Coach Tim brought him in Gilas mainly for what he brings to the defensive end of the game.

“That’s something I’ve always took pride in and continue to do. I want to use that defense as a motivator for the team. In today’s game, a lot of that effort came from me in the backcourt. Pressuring the other team’s guards to make it hard for them to bring the ball up and get into their offense,” said Newsome.

When asked if he has something to prove after being the last cut from the team in the recently concluded World Cup hosting of the Philippines, Newsome stressed that he just wants to serve the country in the best way he can.

“I’m just fulfilling my duties for the country. It takes a lot of courage to step up and put your career and reputation on the line, especially for all the country to see. As far as trying to prove anything, no I’m not. I’m just here to do my duty and my job,” said Newsome.
