Phoenix Acquires Mamuyac from Rain or Shine in Future-Pick Deal
The PBA approved a trade Thursday sending Rain or Shine captain Gian Mamuyac and the Elasto Painters’ Season 53 second-round draft pick to Phoenix Super LPG in exchange for the Fuel Masters’ Season 53 first-round selection.
Mamuyac will attend his first Phoenix practice Friday morning before visiting Rain or Shine’s afternoon session to personally say goodbye to his former teammates and coaches, agent PJ Pilares told ALL-STAR Magazine.
The 27-year-old guard hopes to make his Phoenix debut Sunday against Barangay Ginebra at Smart Araneta Coliseum. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
That matchup would carry added weight. Ginebra eliminated Rain or Shine in six games in the Commissioner’s Cup semifinals, with Mamuyac scoring 25 points in the deciding game. Ginebra had also surfaced as a potential destination in recent trade speculation, although Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao said no discussions had taken place. Phoenix then faces Rain or Shine on Tuesday, potentially giving Mamuyac an immediate game against his former team.
Phoenix and Mamuyac’s representatives are working toward finalizing a three-year contract valued close to a maximum PBA deal, according to Pilares. Rain or Shine’s highest proposal was ₱330,000 per month over three years, with gradual increases each season. Mamuyac wanted to remain with the franchise that drafted him but ultimately felt the offer did not reflect his value as a player.
The move reunites Mamuyac with Tyler Tio, his teammate during Ateneo’s three consecutive UAAP championships from 2017 through 2019, and pairs him with fellow former Blue Eagle Kai Ballungay. Mamuyac, Tio and Ballungay are represented by Pilares under the TITAN Management Group.
Tio agreed to his own three-year extension with Phoenix last week after averaging 9.9 points, 2.9 assists and 1.2 rebounds during the Commissioner’s Cup, helping the Fuel Masters return to the playoffs following a two-year absence. Tio has spent his entire four-year PBA career with Phoenix since being selected 14th overall in the same stacked 2022 draft in which Mamuyac went fifth.
Mamuyac leaves Rain or Shine after four seasons as one of the league’s leading two-way guards. A two-time PBA All-Star and the 2024-25 Sportsmanship Award recipient, he averaged 13.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals in the most recent Commissioner’s Cup.
He now joins a Phoenix team that has opened the Governors’ Cup at 2-0 following victories over Magnolia and Meralco.
