The UAAP does not plan to follow the PBA in implementing a 4-point shot for their basketball games, league executive director Rebo Saguisag told ALL-STAR Magazine in an exclusive interview.
Despite calling the pro league’s decision to add a 4-point shot from beyond 27 feet an “interesting innovation,” Saguisag explained that because the UAAP follows guidelines set by international federations with their respective sporting competitions, this new weapon will not be utilized in their collegiate league.
“The UAAP’s reason for being is in support of the national sports programs and sending them abroad,” Saguisag said.
“If you follow international rules, [we’ll be using that first]. We’re limited by that. It’s actually an interesting innovation, but we cannot veer. We’re trying to align as much as possible to the international federation rules of each sport.”
Saguisag also shared that the UAAP is considering having a gymnastics competition in future seasons following the recent growth in popularity of the sport thanks to two-time gold medalist Carlos Yulo’s success in the Paris Olympics.
However, this does not come without challenges.
“From the UAAP side as a collective, it’s tough to organize a tournament, but the bigger challenge I suppose will be from the perspective of the individual member schools who have to form new teams, provide new equipment, and space for the training of this event – scholarships, coaches, and uniforms,” Saguisag explained.
“To form new teams right now, medyo mahirap, but what I can say is without naming the proponent, one of the decision-makers actually initiated the talks na.”
