Football Kings: UP Claims UAAP Season 88 in Crown Dramatic Final
The UAAP Season 88 men’s football final between the UP Fighting Maroons and the FEU Tamaraws burst into life from the opening whistle, with both sides attacking at full speed and trading chances in an end-to-end opening stretch that set the tone for a thrilling championship match.
FEU eventually drew first blood. A header from Karl Absalon just before halftime gave the Tamaraws the lead and momentum heading into the break.
Despite trailing, UP stayed level with FEU in intensity throughout the second half. The Fighting Maroons continued to press forward, creating opportunities and keeping the pressure on as the match wore on. FEU held onto their slim advantage deep into regulation and appeared poised to secure the title.

With just a minute remaining, the match took a dramatic turn. FEU conceded a penalty, and Charles Lobitaña kept his composure to convert from the spot, leveling the score and forcing extra time.
Extra time proved just as tight and physical as the opening 90 minutes, with neither side willing to give an inch. The breakthrough finally came for UP when Ramil Bation III found the net, completing the comeback and putting the Fighting Maroons ahead.
After the final whistle, UP head coach Popoy Clarino pointed to the long road behind the championship, stressing that the victory was about growth as much as silverware.
“Yung sakripisyo na ’yun, yung pinagdaanan namin buong taon, lahat ng training, pawis, dugo, this is the reward. More than winning, it’s about how they grew as a team and as individuals. I’m very happy that we were able to give our graduating players the send-off they truly deserve.”
Moments after the title was secured, team captain and Finals MVP Charles Lobitaña delivered one of the night’s simplest yet loudest statements. Asked about his future, he smiled and said, “I’ll play one more year.” It was a quiet promise that capped an unforgettable championship run.
As the Maroons lifted the trophy and the crowd rang out with chants of “Ole, ole, ole,” a sea of maroon spilled onto the pitch. Players were met with shared tears and laughter, lifted up and jumped alongside by Iskos and Iskas celebrating as one with their footballeros. It was that moment of togetherness that truly sealed UP’s championship night.
