UST Edges Ateneo to Reach NSAC Semifinals

University of Santo Tomas held off Ateneo de Manila University for an 86-84 victory, advancing to the semifinals of the NSAC College Basketball Campus Tour.

The Growling Tigers controlled most of the game behind their balanced offense and interior scoring, but Ateneo consistently answered every run to stay within striking distance throughout the contest.

UST tried to pull away, but the Blue Eagles stayed within reach throughout the game and repeatedly threatened late in the fourth quarter.

Mark Llemit led the way for UST and earned Best Player of the Game honors after finishing with 21 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Collins Akowe added 17 points and eight rebounds, while Gelo Crisostomo contributed 11 points and seven assists.

The Growling Tigers leaned heavily on their efficiency inside, scoring 48 points in the paint while also controlling the boards, 49-36.

Ateneo answered through timely outside shooting and transition opportunities.

Jared Bahay paced the Blue Eagles with 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists, while Kieffer Alas added 14 markers off the bench. Kyle Gamber also chipped in 11 points.

Despite UST controlling the tempo for much of the game, Ateneo repeatedly closed the gap behind its perimeter shooting and defensive pressure. The Blue Eagles knocked down 15 three-pointers and forced 18 UST turnovers to keep the game tight until the final moments.

But the Growling Tigers delivered the crucial defensive stops late, including a key steal in the closing seconds, to finally secure the hard-fought win and move on to the semifinals.
