What To Expect in PVL: Galeries-Cignal, Creamline-Capital1, Petron Gazz-Chery Tiggo

PVL continues with three matches on Tuesday, January 21, at the PhilSports Arena. Some teams will defend their standings, while others seek to improve their records; let’s go over the day’s matches:
1:30 PM Galeries Tower Highrisers VS. Cignal HD Spikers
Opening the thrilling day is No. 2 Cignal HD Spikers against the Galeries Tower Highrisers, currently ranked 10th in the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference. Cignal looks to defend their high ranking with Gel Cayuna ranked 1st-Best Sever and 2nd-Best Setter, along with Dawn Macandili-Catindig as the league’s 1st-Best Digger.
Cignal ranked second among twelve teams with a 4-1 record. The team lost its last game against the top-seeded Petro Gazz Angels on December 14, 2024. In their past games, the Cignal HD Spikers came out strong every set with their talented team.
The Galeries Tower Highrisers boost their talented athletes, such as France Ronquillo, the league’s 8th-best Spiker and 8th-best Receiver; Julia Coronel ranked 4th Best Server; and Alyssa Eroa, the 2nd-best Digger.
Currently standing at 1-5, the Highrisers look to overcome errors and secure another win. Even during the team’s lost games, their statistics show how tough of an opponent they can be. Their ability to push matches into a 5-set game is something to watch out for.
4:00 PM Creamline Cool Smashers VS. Capital1 Solar Spikers
The Capital1 Solar Spikers will face the Creamline Cool Smashers, the only team to move forward with no losses for the 2024-25 PVL All-Filipino Conference. Creamline is home to some of the most talented volleyball players in the league, such as Jema Galanza, who holds the current Rank 6 in the following categories: Best Spiker, Best Receiver, and Best Server. The team also has Bernadeth Pons as the league’s 9th-Best Spiker; Michele Gumabao as the 10th-Best Spiker; Bea de Leon as the 5th-Best Spiker; and Kyle Negrito as the 1st-Best Setter.
Facing Creamline, Capital1 Solar Spikers boasts Heather Guino-o as the 9th-Best Server and 3rd-Best Receiver. Roma Mae Doromal holds the current rank of 5 for Best Digger, and Iris Tolenada is ranked 7th for Best Setter.
Based on the current standings, Creamline will most likely win this matchup. They hold a perfect record, indicating the team’s consistency and great performance. However, Capital1 will Trisha Genesis, who joined the team from Nxled, with hopes to spoil their opponent’s record.
6:30 PM Petro Gazz Angels VS. Chery Tiggo Crossovers
Top-seeded Petro Gazz Angels will face the Chery Tiggo Crossovers for the last game on Tuesday, January 21. Petro Gazz has top performers in their team, with Brook Van Sickle holding multiple rankings in different categories: 3rd Best Scorer, 3rd Best Spiker, 3rd Best Blocker, 2nd Best Server, 6th Best Digger, and 9th Best Receiver. Joining her on the leaderboards is Myla Pablo as the 7th Best Spiker, Remy Palma as the 10th Best Server, and Djanel Cheng as the 8th Best Setter.
Chery Tiggo Crossovers is home to several top-ranked players, such as Cess Robles, the 7th Best Scorer and 8th 8th-best digger, and Ara Galang, the 9th-best scorer and 7th-best blocker. Abyl Maraño ranked 3rd in Best Server, Jen Nierva ranked 7th in Best Digger, and Alina Bicar ranked 9th in Best Setter.
Based on individual rankings, both teams have very powerful players. The Angels’ record of 5-1 showcases their consistency and performance. The Crossovers will look to improve their 4-2 record as they face the league’s current No. 1.
