As the UAAP Season 87 looms on September 7th, Ateneo’s preparations are already under the microscope. Chris Koon, an incoming co-captain for the Blue Eagles, reflects on the team’s journey through the off-season and the upcoming challenges.
Training Adjustments and Team Dynamics
The transition from the FilOil Preseason Cup to the regular season has been a learning curve for Ateneo, especially with a roster heavily populated by rookies. Koon, an experienced player and leader, notes that this year has been notably different due to the influx of new talent. Despite the challenges, including a string of preseason losses, Koon emphasizes the importance of sticking to Coach Tab Baldwin’s system. “You have to trust the process,” he says, reflecting on the team’s tough start and gradual improvements.
This season’s early start, moving back to a traditional September tip-off, has rekindled memories of pre-pandemic schedules. For Koon, it’s an exciting shift, even if the preparations have been unusually taxing. The presence of numerous rookies has necessitated a more hands-on approach to leadership. “It’s a new experience dealing with different personalities,” he admits, highlighting the added responsibility of mentoring the younger players.
Leadership and Team Chemistry
Koon, alongside co-captain Sean Quitevis, navigates the delicate balance between leading and mentoring. They complement each other’s styles: while Quitevis engages with the group collectively, Koon often handles one-on-one interactions. This dynamic has proven essential in guiding the rookies and maintaining team cohesion.
Handling media scrutiny and internal issues is another facet of their leadership. Koon stresses the importance of open communication within the team, encouraging even the quietest players to voice their concerns. This approach not only fosters a supportive environment but also aligns with Baldwin’s broader vision for the team’s culture.
Veteran Insights and Future Plans
Reflecting on his journey from a nervous rookie in Season 84 to a confident captain, Koon acknowledges the growth in his leadership and confidence. He remains deeply connected with the Ateneo community and values guidance from past players like Raffy Verano.
Looking ahead, Koon plans to return to the U.S. after the season to reconnect with family and explore future opportunities, whether in the U.S. or the PBA. Despite the uncertainty, he remains optimistic about his post-college career.
Rookie Impressions and Team Potential
Among the new faces, several rookies have caught Koon’s attention. While Jared Bahay is a known standout, players like Wacky Espina and Sam Reyes have also made an impression with their contributions and adaptability. Koon believes that the team’s depth and the rookies’ progress are promising signs for the season.
As Ateneo gears up for the new season, the focus is on building a strong foundation with the young roster. Koon’s leadership and the team’s collective resilience will be crucial as they aim to translate their hard work into success on the court.
