CSB’s Carillo Transfers to UE Red Warriors, Eyes Opportunity

Gene Carillo is making a move in his young basketball career. The former Adamson Baby Falcons standout and CSB Blazers recruit has transferred to the UE Red Warriors, a decision that will see him sit out the 2025 season due to residency requirements before becoming eligible to play for three UAAP seasons starting with Season 89.

Carillo, a 6-foot-2 guard from Zamboanga City, was one of the key contributors to Adamson’s historic UAAP Season 86 championship win, helping the Baby Falcons clinch the title against the Collins Akowe-led NU Bullpups. He later committed to De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde, where he played in the NCAA and gained valuable experience both on and off the court.

Despite his appreciation for his time with CSB, Carillo acknowledged the tough competition for minutes at his position. In his own words, “Gusto ko lang po na mag-grow, at maipakita yung talent ko. Kaya po ako lumipat. Then knowing po sa CSB, loaded po talaga ang mga players dun, especially sa position ko.”

His decision to transfer was also driven by the opportunity for more meaningful court time and a connection with UE’s new coaching leadership. “Sa UE po kasi feel ko po more playing time. Then maganda rin po yung coaching staff nila,” Carillo said, referring to the arrival of new head coach Chris Gavina. Gavina, a respected name in Philippine basketball circles, is expected to bring a fresh approach to the Red Warriors program.

While Carillo moves on, he remains grateful to CSB for his development. “Thankful po ako sa CSB kasi on and off the court marami po akong natutunan sa coaches and teammates ko po,” he shared.

Carillo has already begun practicing with the UE team, getting acclimated to the system and preparing for his eventual debut in Season 89. With a mix of humility, hunger, and proven skill, he aims to be a major contributor in UE’s rebuild and help restore the Red Warriors’ standing in the UAAP.

This next chapter presents a new challenge and a chance for Carillo to prove himself further — this time in a league he once conquered at the junior level, now as a collegiate athlete determined to make his mark.
