Joanie Delgaco almost had her seat in the quarterfinals. While she showed her strong skills as she swept along the waters, she lost her momentum midway.
Delgaco competed in the Women’s Single Sculls today from Lane 5 at Heat 2 representing the Philippines in Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. She started the race strongly averaging 40 strokes and earning third place in the first quarter of the race. She finished with a 3.94-second gap from Switzerland’s Aurelia-Maxima Janez who was in second place.
However, after the 1000-meter mark, she had a fight against SLO for third place. She lost her chance to qualify for a quarterfinal slot when she dropped to fourth place as Nina Kostanjšek of Slovenia passed her by with only a 3-second gap.
She finished the race in fourth place with her time of 7 minutes and 56.26 seconds, only around 10 seconds behind third place. She is off to compete in the repechage round tomorrow in order to advance.
The top three finishers in each heat advanced to the quarterfinals. Repechage is a second chance for the Olympians who did not qualify by a short margin. Delgaco will be a contender in the repechage stage to fight for a seat in the quarterfinals.
