In a stunning development that adds star power to Strong Group Athletics (SGA), former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins has been signed to play for the Philippine-based team in the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship, scheduled to take place from January 24 to February 2, 2025. Cousins announced the news on Twitter, expressing his enthusiasm for the opportunity.

“I’m excited to announce that I’ll be teaming up with Charles Tiu, Jacob Lao, and Strong Group to represent the Philippines in the Dubai International Basketball Tournament. Can’t wait to help bring home SGA’s first-ever Dubai International Basketball championship. Let’s get to work! 🇵🇭 🇵🇭,” tweeted Cousins.

Cousins, a four-time NBA All-Star, is best known for his prominent career in the NBA. Drafted fifth overall by the Sacramento Kings in 2010, the 6-foot-10 big man became one of the league’s most versatile centers. Cousins averaged over 20 points and 10 rebounds in seven consecutive seasons and earned All-NBA Second Team honors twice. Though injuries have limited his playing time in recent years, Cousins’ skill set and experience will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to SGA’s championship aspirations.

SGA’s Road to Redemption

SGA narrowly missed claiming the Dubai tournament title last year, falling to Al Riyadi in heartbreaking fashion. Ismael Abdelmoneim’s buzzer-beating three-pointer secured the championship for the Lebanese team, leaving SGA as the runner-up. This year, the team aims to redeem itself, and Cousins’ arrival marks a major step toward achieving that goal.

Tiu also confirmed that several familiar faces from previous tournaments will rejoin SGA for the Dubai campaign. Former Gilas Pilipinas stars Andray Blatche and Angelo Kouame, along with rising talents Dave Ildefonso and Allen Liwag, are expected to suit up once again. Liwag, Ildefonso, and Kouame were part of SGA’s championship run at the 43rd William Jones Cup last July.

Strength in Unity

Cousins will not only bring his offensive and defensive prowess to SGA but also an unparalleled level of leadership. His presence alongside Blatche, another former NBA player with international experience, could create a formidable inside-outside duo. The combination of young stars like Ildefonso and Liwag with seasoned veterans like Cousins and Blatche promises a well-rounded and competitive roster.

With a mix of talent, experience, and motivation to avenge last year’s loss, SGA is poised to make a strong run at the championship in Dubai.
