Gavina Sets High Standards for UE, Praises Abate, Emerging Stars
The University of the East (UE) Red Warriors are poised for a transformative season under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Chris Gavina. With a focus on instilling a culture of accountability and excellence, Gavina has set clear expectations for his players, particularly veterans like John Abate and emerging talents such as Nico Mulingtapang, Wello Lingolingo, and Rainer Maga.
John Abate: Embracing Leadership in His Final Season
John Abate, a seasoned guard, has committed to returning for his final year of eligibility in UAAP Season 88. His decision underscores his dedication to the program that has supported him throughout his collegiate career. Reflecting on his commitment, Abate stated, “UE gave me an opportunity, and I’m going to stick by them because they’re loyal to me. I want to finish my career with them.”
Coach Gavina recognizes the significance of Abate’s return and has challenged him to elevate his leadership. Drawing from his own experiences, Gavina shared on The Navs Effect, “I told the same thing to John. You guys are coming in and everyone understands that you guys have had a tremendous season last year, but right now, you’re back down to zero. In my eyes, you got to earn my respect. You got to earn my trust, you got to earn your minutes. Nothing’s going to be given.”
Gavina emphasized the unique pressures faced by a lone senior, recalling his own collegiate experience: “I was the lone senior in my team, and it was frustrating at times… when you’re on your last year, and you’re outworking everybody, those standards are going to create some conflict.” He has set high expectations for Abate, asserting, “I’m holding you to the highest accountability, because I know you want to get this team to where it hasn’t been in sixteen years, just like I do.”
The Red Warriors seek to end a Final Four drought which started following the 2009 season.
Emerging Talents: Mulingtapang, Lingolingo, and Maga
Beyond the veteran presence of Abate, Coach Gavina is keen on harnessing the potential of the team’s up-and-coming players.
Nico Mulingtapang: Gavina is familiar with Mulingtapang’s capabilities, having observed him during his tenure in the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC). He remarked, “I played against him in NBTC two years ago, with Batang Tiaong so I know what he’s capable of.” Mulingtapang’s playmaking skills were evident despite limited playing time in Season 87.
Rainer Maga: Emerging as a potential star, Maga has impressed with his composure and defensive tenacity. Gavina noted, “Surprising is Rainer Maga has emerged as a possible star for us, considering how I love his composure and running his team, and he’s a dog on defense.” Maga’s clutch performances have been pivotal, including a standout moment where he contributed significantly to ending a nine-year losing streak against Ateneo.
Wello Lingolingo: Displaying versatility and scoring prowess, Lingolingo has caught Gavina’s attention. He observed, “Lingolingo, I feel like he has star written all over him, to be honest. He’s a three-level scorer, he’s highly coachable, and he has a chip on his shoulder.” Lingolingo’s clutch performances have been instrumental, notably his game-winning buzzer-beater against Adamson, which secured a 63-62 victory for UE.
A New Era Under Coach Gavina
With a blend of experienced leadership and emerging talent, Coach Gavina is committed to fostering a culture of hard work and accountability. His approach emphasizes that every player, regardless of past achievements, must continually earn their place and contribute to the team’s success. As the Red Warriors prepare for the upcoming season, the synergy between Gavina’s leadership and the players’ dedication holds promise for a revitalized and competitive UE squad.
