Gilas Gears Up for FIBA Asia, Matches Against Macau Black Bears
The countdown to the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 is on, and Gilas Pilipinas is leaving no stone unturned in their preparation. On July 28, the national men’s basketball team will face the Macau Black Bears in a crucial tune-up match at the iconic Smart-Araneta Coliseum. This game isn’t just another exhibition — it’s the final test before Gilas heads to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, ready to challenge some of Asia’s toughest opponents.

Grouped alongside New Zealand, Chinese Taipei, and Iraq in the tournament’s first round, Gilas knows every practice and every game counts. Coach Tim Cone and his staff see the upcoming clash with the Black Bears as a perfect opportunity to sharpen their team’s chemistry and game rhythm.
“The tune-up games will really help us,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio. “Our players are coming off a long grind in the Philippine Cup semifinals, so this match will give them vital competition and a chance to get in sync. It’s also a great moment for our fans to rally behind the team before they leave for Saudi Arabia.”
The Macau Black Bears are no strangers to the international basketball scene. Founded in 2017 as Chong Son Kung Fu, they have evolved into a formidable force competing in the East Asia Super League and The Asian Tournament. Their roster is a mix of local talent, mixed heritage players, and strong imports — ingredients that helped them famously beat the Chinese national team 83-78 last year. Coach Cone expects a tough but exciting battle.
“They’re really strong, and they’ve got good imports,” Cone said. “It should be a very interesting friendly.”
Gilas Pilipinas will put its full lineup on the court, though the team will continue to be without towering center Kai Sotto, who is still recovering from an ACL injury. The squad’s eyes are firmly set on improving their ninth-place finish from the last FIBA Asia Cup.
For fans, the July 28 match is more than just a game. It’s a send-off, a chance to cheer the national team loud and proud before they embark on their next big challenge. Tickets are available now via TicketNet.
As the clock ticks down to the FIBA Asia Cup, Gilas Pilipinas is tuning every detail, every play, and every moment to ensure they’re ready when the spotlight shines brightest.
