Rising basketball star Kainoa Patton has officially obtained his Philippine passport, making him eligible to represent the Philippines in international competition under FIBA rules. The 15-year-old combo guard, born on June 18, 2009, secured his dual eligibility just in time—before turning 16—a key requirement to play as a local in FIBA tournaments.

Patton, a 6’2” standout from Riverside, California, plays for Corona Centennial High School and the Paul George Elite club team. Already recognized as the top-ranked guard in California’s Class of 2028, he has been drawing national attention for his scoring ability, athleticism, and maturity on the court. His recent performances at elite events like the Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp and the Smart-NBTC tournament have further cemented his status as a future NCAA Division I prospect—and potentially an NBA player down the line.

In the 2025 NBTC tournament, Patton averaged 22.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, while hitting nearly 32% from beyond the arc. His versatility and poise against international youth competition impressed scouts and coaches alike.

With his Filipino heritage now formally recognized through his passport, the door is open for Patton to join the Gilas Pilipinas Youth program. FIBA requires players with dual nationality to secure their passport before age 16 to be considered locals. Patton has now met that requirement. It’s now up to Gilas Youth head coach LA Tenorio and his staff to determine whether the young guard will be included in the national pool for upcoming international competitions.

Patton’s commitment to playing for the Philippines has been clear from the start.

Whether or not he’s called up this year, Kainoa Patton is now officially in the conversation. The Philippines has secured a high-upside talent with a real chance to develop into a major contributor on the international stage.
