‘Kuya and Goat’ Thompson Reflects on PBA’s Greatest 50 Honor

Scottie Thompson continues to add to his already impressive legacy after being named one of the PBA’s 50 Greatest Players, a recognition that cements his place among the league’s all-time best. Despite his numerous accolades – including a PBA MVP award, multiple championships, and Finals MVP honors – Thompson remains proud but motivation, emphasizing that his journey is far from over.

“I’m still young sa career ko and I have to keep working hard pa,” said Thompson during a press conference hosted by Arena Plus, where Justin Brownlee and RJ Abarrientos were introduced as the brand’s newest ambassadors, joining Thompson, who has been with them for three years. “Alam ko marami pang darating na opportunities sa buhay ko. Not just in basketball, but in life.”

Thompson acknowledged the competitive nature of the selection, admitting that he was honored to be part of such an elite group.

“Sobrang daming deserving sa spot, but still nakasama ako. For me, it’s a testament of my hard work,” he said. “Alam ko gaano kong pinaghirapan yung mga ginagawa ko sa buhay, sa court, off the court. I think maraming deserving. Truly blessed nakasama din. It’s all kay God na nangyari ito.”

Thompson Gets Praise from Brownlee and Abarrientos

Justin Brownlee, who has played alongside Thompson in multiple PBA battles, had high praise for his work ethic and impact on the game.

“He’s a hard-worker. Most of the time, the first guy in the gym and the last guy to leave the gym,” said the man many consider as the “GOAT Import,” including Sean Chambers. “On the court, what he’s been able to do since I’ve been here, it’s amazing. In size he plays like he’s 6-foot-10 or 7-feet sometimes the way he grabs rebounds. I think it’s well-deserved and definitely congratulations. It’s been an honor to be your teammate.”

Rookie RJ Abarrientos, who recently joined Barangay Ginebra, echoed the sentiment, expressing gratitude for the chance to play with a PBA legend.

“Wala pa akong taon sa Ginebra, pero sobrang blessed ako dahil naabutan ko si kuya Scottie sa Ginebra,” said the electric young protegee. “Sobrang hard-working. Pati sa family niya, hindi lang sa basketball. Inspirasyon siya sa kabataan ngayon.”

The young guard didn’t hold back in his admiration for Thompson: “He’s my kuya and he’s my GOAT.”

Legacy

Thompson’s inclusion in the PBA’s 50 Greatest Players list is backed by an impressive resume:

Known for his incredible rebounding ability despite standing only 6’1″, Thompson has made a career out of playing bigger than his size, often dominating the boards against much taller opponents, sending the rabid Ginebra crowd into uproar. His work ethic, leadership, and clutch performances have made him a fan favorite and a role model for aspiring young players.

With more years ahead in his career, Thompson is focused on continuing to grow both on and off the court. And if his teammates’ words are any indication, his impact on the PBA could have more chapters to come.
