The University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons captured the UAAP Season 87 men’s basketball title in thrilling fashion, defeating the De La Salle Green Archers in a decisive Game 3 showdown. A pivotal moment came in the dying minutes when Francis Lopez, whose performance had come under scrutiny after Game 2, stepped up with a clutch three-pointer that sealed UP’s victory. The young star didn’t hold back in his post-game reflections, candidly sharing his thoughts on the pressure, his critics, and the unwavering trust from his teammates.

When asked about his crucial shot that put UP ahead by four points with just over a minute remaining, Lopez recalled the moment vividly:

“I think it was Harold (Alarcon) who passed me the ball. As soon as he passed me the ball, I said ‘I’m going to shoot this’, and you know, it went in.”

The crowd erupted as the ball swished through the net, but Lopez knew the job wasn’t finished. His immediate reaction was a blend of focus and disbelief.

“You know, it was really a surreal moment on that. But the game wasn’t over, so I got to keep my composure, and after that buzzer, man, everything sinked in. All the hard work, all the support, especially from the UP community. I really want to thank the Man above. Thank you so much. I really worked hard, we really worked hard for this win. I’m really happy, man.”

For Lopez, the journey to this moment wasn’t easy. After a tough Game 2 where missed free throws and a costly turnover put him in the crosshairs of criticism, he made it clear that the negativity didn’t faze him.

“Like I said, I don’t really care what they say. I’m not here to please anyone from the outside. As a matter of fact, fuck them. I don’t give a shit, to be honest. What I care about is the team, what’s inside of us. I’m really happy we got this win, you know. I can finally say that I’m officially a champion.”

Despite the noise, Lopez’s faith in his teammates’ support never wavered. Their belief in him, even after Game 2, proved to be a vital source of strength.

“They still trusted me after that loss, you know. We were still able to talk to one another. It was really just a surreal moment, man. They’re still believing on me, and I’m so happy that they’re still there for me even after that loss. We had to conquer this time, so, yup, really happy.”

Lopez’s grit, resilience, and undeniable talent helped UP rise above the pressure, and his raw honesty in the aftermath underscores the passion he pours into the game. For the UP community and the Fighting Maroons, Lopez’s clutch heroics and fiery words are now etched into the rich history of the program’s success.

With the title secured, Lopez and the Fighting Maroons have given UP fans another reason to celebrate, proving that resilience and trust are the backbone of champions.
