Phillips Draws Overseas Interest, Steps Away from San Juan
Michael Phillips will no longer suit up for the San Juan Knights as the Gilas Pilipinas forward recovers from a demanding stretch of basketball and explores professional opportunities that emerged following his performance in the latest FIBA window.
Benjamin Phillips, Michael’s brother, told ALL-STAR Magazine that several professional teams have reached out to the family and his representatives at Tré Sports Management after the 24-year-old impressed with the national team, particularly in his 14-rebound performance against Australia.
No agreement has been reached with any team, however, and Benjamin clarified that reports connecting Michael to Japan did not come from the Phillips camp.
“That was never stated on our side at all, and so that must be speculation there,” Benjamin said.
“There’s a multitude of teams that are inquiring about Mike to myself and to our agents, his representation, Tré Sports Management. We haven’t finalized anything.”
The Phillips camp asked San Juan for clearance to consider the inquiries and pursue potential opportunities as they develop.
Benjamin said they are not yet prepared to disclose the teams or countries involved and will continue gauging interest over the next several weeks.
“We don’t have a definitive team picked. We don’t have any concrete decisions made yet,” he said. “We just wanted to be able to pursue any of these opportunities as they come.”
Phillips’ next move could have significant implications for a player who was previously expected to become one of the leading prospects in the next PBA Rookie Draft. Benjamin stressed that the PBA remains part of Michael’s plans and continues to represent one of his career ambitions, but the family also recognizes that the current interest could produce a rare opportunity.
“We don’t want to close the door on the PBA. The PBA is still something that is a dream of Mike’s,” Benjamin said. “However, these are some life-changing opportunities that we have to consider.”
Another priority for Phillips is remaining available for future Gilas Pilipinas call-ups. His unrestricted local status and strong showing against Australia strengthened his case for a continued role in the national-team program.
Before determining his next destination, Phillips will first focus on recovering physically. Benjamin said his brother dealt with cramping and a left ankle injury during the FIBA window after already absorbing significant wear during his time in the MPBL.
“He’s healthy, but just physically exhausted and worn currently,” Benjamin said. “Nothing major, and he will heal up fine over the coming weeks.”

Benjamin confirmed that Phillips will not play any more games for San Juan
“After a demanding stretch with Gilas and the MPBL, Michael made the decision to step away from San Juan at this time to focus on recovery, training, and preparing his body for what comes next,” he said.
“He is extremely grateful to the organization, his teammates, and the fans for his time with the Knights and wishes them continued success.”
Phillips joined San Juan after concluding his collegiate career with De La Salle and helped the Knights during the early portion of their MPBL campaign.
His next professional destination remains undecided, but his camp is now actively evaluating multiple possibilities generated by his international performance.
