San Beda University’s men’s basketball program has encountered a significant setback as promising 6-foot-8 recruit, Xavier Gentles, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during a recent practice session. The injury requires surgical intervention and will sideline Gentles for the entirety of NCAA Season 101.

Gentles, a Filipino-Jamaican talent born in Canada, was a notable acquisition for the Red Lions. He last played high school basketball in Canada for Orangeville Prep and also suited up for champion team Fil-Canada Nation in the NBTC last March. Although he scarcely played, his potential was enough to entice team manager Jude Roque. Standing at 6-foot-8, his presence was anticipated to bolster San Beda’s frontcourt depth, providing the team with a blend of size and potential.

Despite being earmarked as a raw prospect, Gentles’ injury is a considerable blow to the Red Lions’ roster plans. His development under the guidance of multi-titled coach Norman Black was progressing, with daily workouts aimed at acclimating him to the pace and style of Philippine basketball. Head coach Yuri Escueta had previously highlighted Gentles’ strengths, noting his height, willingness to learn, and potential fit within the team’s system.

The absence of Gentles for the upcoming season places additional pressure on San Beda’s frontcourt. Veteran forward Yukien Andrada has confirmed his return for a final season, aiming to lead the team back to championship contention after a disappointing finish in Season 100. Veteran player James Payosing is also expected to return for his final season as a Red Lion.

The team will also look to other key recruits and holdovers to fill the void left by Gentles’ injury.

As Gentles embarks on his recovery journey, the team remains hopeful for his full rehabilitation and eventual contribution to the team’s future campaigns. His potential remains a valuable asset, and the program is committed to supporting him through this challenging period.
