The Ateneo Blue Eagles hit a rocky start with continuous losses during the first round of  UAAP Season 87. They are now bouncing back from that stomp after securing their first back-to-back wins of the season against NU and UST.

“Honestly, we just hit a time of crisis like that—a tough first round,” captain Sean Quitevis admitted. “It was important for us to shut out all the noise, trust our inner circle, not lose belief in one another, and really just buy into our system.”

At the start of the season, the Blue Eagles faced criticisms for how their team was playing. Quitevis explained how they focused on what they do as a team, and trusted the process set by their coaches.

“We had to stay the course,” He said. “That was the only way we could bounce back.”

It is still a work in progress, and they plan to mature as a team quickly. Quitevis also highlighted the importance of giving back to the Ateneo Community and giving them a good fight for this season.

“We’re not yet where we wanna be, but we’re taking it one game at a time. Each game is an opportunity for us to grow, and we’ll see where the table turns out,” he shared. “It’s important for us to fight for our community right now.”

He says that it seems like they are backed up against the wall from the first round and now all they have to do in their upcoming games is fight. It was something they lacked and he says it’s what they have to bring to their games more.

“We’re coming into round two with more fight. It’s like our backs are against the wall, and there’s no other choice but to fight. You got us backed up onto the wall—now we’re just gonna throw everything we’ve got.”

After regrouping and slowly revamping their team during the season, a big factor was having more clarity on their roles and what they wanted to do as players. It helped their chemistry to play better in their recent games.

“I think we just understand our jobs better—understanding who we are as players, where we want to go, and how we wanna play as a team,” He explained.

He credited the coaching team for helping them create a better system and see more purpose in themselves and the team. As they gear up for the upcoming games, he admitted that the fight isn’t over for them, and they are still building their team up.

“The coaches really emphasized that to us, and we just bought into it,” He added.
