Another Ilonggo Pride Takes the National Stage as Rosquillo Debuts for Philippines
In Philippine football, Iloilo and the beautiful game have long been a perfect match.
For decades, the province has produced some of the country’s finest footballers, with names such as Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta, and many others leaving their mark on the national team. As one generation passes the torch to the next, Iloilo continues to prove why it remains one of the nation’s football hotbeds.
The latest player to emerge from that proud tradition is Jaime Rosquillo.
The Dynamic Herb Cebu FC defender took another significant step in his football journey on Tuesday night, earning his senior national team debut as the Philippine Men’s National Football Team opened its Tri-Nation Friendlies campaign with a commanding 5-1 victory over Guam at Rizal Memorial Stadium.
For Jaime Rosquillo, the match represented the culmination of years of hard work, patience, and perseverance as he finally made his senior national team debut in front of the home crowd.
The Tri-Nation Friendlies have provided Philippine head coach Carles Cuadrat with an opportunity to evaluate new faces and continue building chemistry within the squad. Among the players handed an opportunity were several debutants, including Cole Mrowka and Ken Nishioka. Another player who made the most of his chance was Rosquillo, a homegrown talent from Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
Having previously represented the Philippines at the U17, U19, and U23 levels, Rosquillo has steadily progressed through the national team pathway. Against Guam, he took the next step in that journey, earning a place in the starting lineup and delivering a composed performance at the heart of the defense.
“Representing the Philippines has always been a dream of mine, and to do it at home in front of Filipino fans made it even more special,” Rosquillo shared after the match.
Carrying Iloilo’s Football Tradition Forward
Growing up in Barotac Nuevo, often referred to as the Football Capital of the Philippines, Rosquillo dreamed of one day wearing the national team jersey. On Tuesday night, that dream became reality.
“I always looked up to players who wore the national team jersey. To finally be on that stage and make my debut is something I’ll never forget,” he said.

The young defender showed confidence and maturity throughout the match, helping the Philippines control the game defensively while remaining comfortable in possession. His calm presence at the back was one of the encouraging signs for a national team looking to strengthen its depth ahead of future competitions.
The emotions of the occasion were impossible to ignore. When Rosquillo learned he would be making his senior debut, excitement quickly mixed with pride and nerves.
A Dream Realized
“Representing the Philippines has always been one of my biggest goals,” he said. “When I found out I would be making my debut, I felt excited, proud, and a little nervous at the same time.”
Rather than letting the moment overwhelm him, Rosquillo focused on the preparation that had brought him there.
“Before the match, I just reminded myself to stay calm, trust my preparation, and enjoy the moment. Once I stepped onto the field, all I wanted was to give everything I had for the team and the country.”

While his debut was a significant achievement, the defender sees it as only the beginning. With competition for places increasing within the national team setup, Rosquillo remains determined to continue proving himself whenever called upon.
“I want to continue improving and earning my place in the squad,” he said. “My goal is to keep learning, help the team in any way I can, and make the most of every opportunity given to me.”
For young Filipino footballers hoping to follow a similar path, Rosquillo’s message is simple.
“Never stop believing in your dreams. There will be challenges, setbacks, and sacrifices along the way, but if you stay disciplined, work hard, and trust the process, anything is possible.”
On a night when the Philippines celebrated an emphatic victory, Rosquillo celebrated something equally meaningful: the realization of a dream that began on the football fields of Barotac Nuevo and has now taken him to the senior national team stage.
