Clint Escamis Returns for One Last Year with Mapua Cardinals
In a heartfelt announcement on Wednesday, February 19, Clint Escamis confirmed his return to the Mapúa Cardinals for his final playing season in NCAA Season 101. Speaking during a live session hosted by the Mapúa Global Support Association Inc., Escamis expressed his commitment to the team and the institution.
“One last year for me. One more year. Last dance, farewell tour. One last ride,” he declared, emphasizing his dedication to donning the Cardinals’ jersey for one final season.
Escamis, who has been instrumental in the Cardinals’ recent successes, highlighted his deep affection for Mapúa as a primary reason for his return. “Number one is giving back to Mapúa kasi sobrang mahal ko ang Mapúa,” he shared.
Beyond his passion for basketball, Escamis underscored the importance of education. “Pinagusapan namin ng mom and family ko – important mag graduate. Two of my kuyas graduated from Mapúa. Kung hindi ako mag graduate parang nakakahiya naman yun,” he explained, adding, “Yung diploma, hindi mo mananakaw yun.”

Despite receiving professional offers, including one from the Korean Basketball League (KBL), according to sources, Escamis chose to stay with Mapúa. “‘Should I really go this way?’ Nasa puso ko talaga Mapúa eh,” he reflected, indicating his unwavering loyalty to the Cardinals.

The prospect of achieving back-to-back championships also fuels his determination. “Mas determined ngayon kasi you have a chance to repeat history,” Escamis noted.
The last time the Mapúa Cardinals secured consecutive NCAA titles was in 1990 and 1991, with current head coach Randy Alcantara playing a pivotal role in those victories. In the 1991 championship, the Cardinals clinched their fifth NCAA crown by defeating the San Beda Red Lions in a thrilling three-game series.
Looking ahead to Season 101, the Cardinals are poised to field a formidable lineup. Alongside the returning Escamis, the team anticipates an even more impressive performance from standout rookie Chris Hubilla. New additions such as Cyril Gonzales, Joe Gulapa, Drex Delos Reyes, and Ivan Lazarte are expected to bolster the team’s depth and versatility.
The Mapúa community’s support has been unwavering. According to a source, alumni business owners have generously sponsored the team, funding a celebratory trip to Hong Kong following their recent NCAA title win. Plans are also underway to provide the team with a European pre-season training camp ahead of Season 101. Additionally, these backers matched a KBL offer extended to Escamis, ensuring his continued presence with the Cardinals.
As Escamis embarks on his final collegiate season, his commitment to excellence, both on the court and academically, serves as a model for student athletes.
