Philippine 3×3 Basketball Makes a Comeback

Philippine 3×3 basketball took a significant step toward revival as key stakeholders gathered for a friendly tournament at Gameville Ballpark in Mandaluyong on Monday. The event marked the soft launch of Pilipinas 3×3, a league aiming to reclaim the country’s competitive presence in the fast-paced basketball format.

The initiative, led by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), Smart Sports, Strong Group Athletics (SGA), and MelMac Sports, signals a renewed push for 3×3 basketball in the Philippines. SBP Executive Director Erika Dy highlighted the sport’s continued relevance despite a year-long hiatus, emphasizing its role in the country’s Olympic aspirations for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

MelMac Sports founder Mel Macasaquit, a key figure in the league’s original success, reflected on the Philippines’ historic qualification for the 2019 FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament. “With the support of FIBA and SBP, we made it happen before, and we’re ready to do it again,” he said.

The event drew 16 teams, including squads from SBP, Smart, and SGA, along with media representatives. SBP Gilas Boys, composed of players from PBA teams Ginebra and TNT, claimed the championship, winning a ₱100,000 cash prize, along with additional incentives from sponsors. SGA finished in second place, with company president Jacob Lao donating their ₱30,000 prize to event staff, while SBP Elite secured third place.

PLDT/Smart First Vice President Jude Turcuato underscored the unifying power of sports, stating, “This tournament proves that collaboration can drive Philippine basketball back onto the Olympic stage.”

With a successful launch, stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to restoring Pilipinas 3×3’s place in the national sports landscape. Further details on the league’s full return are expected soon.

The road to a bright future for 3×3 Philippine basketball isn’t an easy one, although with key leaders pushing for it behind the scenes, the potential could be exciting.
