Key Returning Figures Poise Blazers for Strong S101 Campaign
The College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Blazers are gearing up for NCAA Season 101 men’s basketball with renewed determination, as head coach Charles Tiu confirmed his return alongside key players Allen Liwag, Tony Ynot, and Justine Sanchez. The trio, who played pivotal roles in last year’s finals run, chose to delay potential professional careers to chase unfinished business in the collegiate league.
The Blazers’ journey last season ended in heartbreak, falling to the Mapua Cardinals in the NCAA Finals. That defeat, which marked the Cardinals’ first championship in 33 years, left the Blazers hungry for redemption.
“I’m happy that they decided to stay in Benilde to play one more year and finish their studies. It gives us another chance to compete for a championship,” said Tiu in an exclusive interview with ALL-STAR.
This decision is a significant boost to the Blazers, as they retain the services of reigning MVP and Defensive Player of the Year Allen Liwag, whose dominant two-way play has made him a cornerstone of the squad. Joining him are Tony Ynot and Justine Sanchez, both of whom showcased versatility and toughness throughout the previous season.
“Last year, we had a new team with 10-11 fresh faces,” Tiu reflected. “Now we have another chance to run it back.”
An Even Stronger Blazers Roster
In addition to their experienced core, the Blazers will welcome a talented batch of recruits, including James Nacua, SJ Moore, and Raffy Celis. These new faces bring fresh energy and talent, bolstering a roster already considered one of the league’s most skilled.
The Blazers’ ambition extends beyond local competition, with Liwag, Ynot, and Sanchez set to represent Strong Group Athletics (SGA) in the prestigious Dubai Invitational Championship later this month. This international exposure promises to sharpen their skills further ahead of the NCAA season.
The Road Ahead
With a blend of returning stars and promising newcomers, CSB is primed for another deep playoff run. While last year’s finals loss remains a tough pill to swallow, the Blazers’ commitment to growth and team chemistry signals they are ready to rise to the challenge.
Season 101 could be the year they finally end their 25-year championship drought, proving that resilience and loyalty to the program pay dividends.
